Mobile Bone Density Scanning
The measurement of bone mineral density at the forearm is a well-validated technique and has been around for many years. Modern systems allow portable peripheral DEXA scanners to be taken to the GP surgery, clinic or hospital, therefore providing a cost effective way to support osteoporosis prevention and treatment in primary care.
The scanner can be placed in an examination room without special installation or radiation shielding. Scan appointments are at 10-minute intervals therefore up to 25 patients can be seen per session.
From 25 patients scanned approximately 35 - 50% would have a bone density result within the osteoporotic range.
